On Imagination, Reading, and Language Use ( Preschool- Grade 6):

  • Tales Piles So High They Touch the Sky. Legends, tall tales, and other stories about folks who think big, talk fast, and always have the last laugh. This interactive program celebrates imagination and using your wits instead of your fists to get out of a tough spot!

  • Around the World in Stories. Multicultural folktales and legends from around the world, showing how stories travel around the globe and connect different cultures and times. This program highlights how stories, written and verbal, bring us together.

  • Guess What Happens Next. This interactive program keeps children listening and guessing what happens next through lively cumulative folktales and other stories, songs, word plays, and rhymes. Designed to highlight the pre-reading skills of listening, anticipation, and sequencing, this program is both educational and entertaining for the preschool-grade 1 children.

  • Let’s Grow a Story! This program includes a variety of story types and genres (pourquoi tale, legends, tall tales, etc.) and includes participation from the listeners in telling and growing a story. Designed for somewhat smaller groups, it can be part of a classroom workshop or a smaller assembly situation.

  • On American History and Folklore (grades K-6):

  • Iowa History in Story and Legend. With stories from Kate Shelley to the Cardiff Giant, this program brings out the “story” in history and makes the past come alive!

  • American Folklore and Legends. Includes folklore from various regions and groups in the United States and offers children a glimpse of their rich cultural heritage and how it continues today.

  • Riding the Rails: Stories & Tales About Trains in American History. Trains played a key role in American history. From the legend of John Henry to the true-life adventures of Owney the hobo dog, this program honors both the romance and the historical role of the railroad.

  • Character Development and Problem Solving (Grades K-6):

  • Three Cheers for the Underdog! Stories that celebrate the “little guys”—the people and animals who never give up and succeed through their wits and not their fists. Highlights persistence and problem-solving in accomplishing goals and dealing with difficulties.

  • Walk in My Shoes. With a selection of folktales, legends, historical tales, and personal stories, this program shows how imagination can encourage understanding and cooperation.
